Show thread is featuring "audiobooks about racism and antiracism, and amplify black voices."

If you are looking for new listening material (and a chance to support black-owned small business) now's a good time to check them out.

Remember, the first step is to decenter yourself.

I get it, you're trying to learn about how to help uplift BIPOC voices better.

But, you need to take it away from yourself.

It isn't about you.

It's about them.

1/2 Didn't realise until now but a lot of Angela Davis's work is available to read for free online, if you are not able to get a physical copy. She's a very clear writer I think and easy to get to grips with even if this kind of writing is new to you. Links: Are Prisons Obsolete?

I never realized police accountability was such a controversial request.

I compiled a list of alternatives to calling the police, specific to the Albany, NY area. To my white upstate NY followers: PLEASE reconsider before you call the cops on someone.

stonewall wasn't just a riot, it was an anti-cop riot led by black people. any queer not fully on board with black people protesting police brutality is betraying everything pride stands for

CW: protest, police

Sharing this here in case it isn’t making the rounds in the fediverse: a handy Google doc for people to do their own homework on how to be better allies and anti-racist:

Well the last toot I wrote was in March but hey, it’s still relevant! I also would like to clarify that my suggestion about β€œinaction” is that the federal government work on COVID-19 protocols and NOT on massacres of wide swaths of it’s citizens.

How are y’all holding up? It’s not the isolation that’s getting to me, it’s the racism and inaction coming from the government. So, yeah, wooo! πŸ₯³ πŸ™„

Today I mentally pronounced the word β€œVenus” like the word β€œmenus” and it didn’t sound right but I couldn’t figure out why for a few seconds.

Watched Hackers for the first time last night and while it was laughably bad, I also was very much struck by its racial diversity. Yes, the leads were mostly white (even the villains) but it was nice to see a lot of black, Latinx and Asians on screen too.

I feel like I’m still not using Mastodon to its full potential. So far I am following (is following correct terminology?) some jokey accounts and while amusing, not actually useful. How do you find anyone in this place?

β€ͺI’ve decided the world I live in is too hurtful and I’m going to live in Janelle MonΓ‘e world for awhile.

Me trying to stay awake until 10 is the new me trying to stay awake until 11.
